Like many writers they are self employed as they are employed by film companies to write scripts for them. Many writers start out writing short films. The agents help find work for writers and represent the writers work to the companies but also they get a cut for doing this. Writer’s usually write about 10 pages or even more notes which producers then commission a treatment which helps to plan everything out. Most writers use a software called scrivener which is designed by a writer for writers, designed by Keith Blount. It allows writers to gather research the write and gather outlines and early drafts in a project.
To become a screenwriter it is a skill and craft that has to be developed. But screenwriting doesn’t come naturally to people because it is very technical. The writers are very independent themselves as they show there skills through representing there work to companies, whereas agents secure deals and co-ordinate contracts that are appropriate for writers.
Many screenwriters start out by writing short films, they are not only a training ground for starters but equally as useful as a call card in the industry. There are lots of opportunities to produce short films and exhibit them which they then prove a expensive tool in expanding and promoting a talent.
There are many opportunities and competitions for writers for example: Face to face with Stephen Butchard, channel 4 drama presents 4 screenwriting, impressive writing lab, next best page, Scottish arts council, Hollywood film festival, Barcelona GSMA film competition. Those are some of the competitions available now some are international.
